A FAMILY LEGACY

Levine Bros. is family owned and operated since 1922, passed down through four generations. With humble beginnings and only a handful of plumbers, our company eventually grew to service the entire Montreal area. Today, Levine Bros. continues to set the standards in plumbing excellence.

Arthur Levine started A. Levine Plumbing.

Jack Levine started working with Arthur.
17 years younger than Arthur, Jack, age 16, was delivering groceries on his bicycle. He fell off his bicycle as he was trying to make a delivery. Arthur happen to be not far behind, saw the fall, picked up Jack and his bicycle, put them in his truck. Arthur delivered the groceries himself and from then on Jack was working with Arthur.

Isaac Levine Joined the company.
Isaac was a blacksmith by trade. He was making the metal plating on the wooden tires for cars. When rubber tires became more popular, Isaac lost his job. He came to work with Arthur and Jack in the office. The boys would be uninstalling broken plumbing and fixtures and bring it back to the office for Isaac to fix, to be reinstalled after.

The company became Levine Bros. Plumbing with Jack and Arthur as equal partners.

The Levine Bros. bought the building at 4285 De Bullion.
Before they bought it, the back garage was used as the stable for all the horses in the Plateau. Later it was the parking for 9 trucks and later transformed as part of our offices and stock room.

Elliot Levine Joined Levine Bros.

FAQ

Why should I hire a professional plumber when I have a handyman that can do the job for cheaper?

There are many workers and so called “handymen” who claim they can do plumbing work. Unfortunately, we have had to fix many jobs and mistakes made by people clearly not knowledgeable in plumbing systems. There is a reason why hiring professional contractors is important; it will save you money in the long run.

Don’t be fooled by unlicensed contractors and always demand to see their credentials.

I would like to renovate a bathroom or kitchen in my house. Why should I spend more money on fixtures when there are cheaper alternatives available?

The most important thing is to ensure that the fixtures you are buying are certified or approved by a regulatory body, which are quality tested. It is against plumbing code to install any plumbing fixture that does not have proper certification or approbation. Sometimes, there is a reason why non-certified fixtures are cheaper.

However, we can assure you that there are many brands available that offer inexpensive and certified options, and we are happy to help guide you in your purchase.

I have water heating with radiators which uses an oil-fired boiler. I would like to convert away from oil. What do you recommend?

With the increased prices of oil, it is becoming popular to convert away from oil. The best thing to do is to look into a bi-energy system, which work in tandem to heat your house, keeping your existing oil-fired boiler and adding an electric boiler to your system. Hydro-Quebec currently gives a grant for this type of installation. Overall, we find that this is the most economic heating system possible today.

I need a backwater valve. What is it and do I really need one?

A backwater valve is so important to have and maintain to avoid flooding your basement. It is a plumbing fitting that is adjusted on the drainage pipes for fixtures located in your basement, allowing water to drain into the city sewer and not let water come back up your drainage pipes.

It is important to not only protect your backwater valve but also inspect it annually, and we are always available for inspection and cleaning or replacement of your backwater valve.

I have rats in my house! What should I do?

There are two issues to deal with once you find evidence of a rat infestation. First, call an exterminator to get rid of the existing rats. Then, to find out how they got in and stop more from entering, that’s where we come in. Rats are attracted to your house by the smell of broken or unsealed drains (that is why p-traps are important). We perform camera or smoke tests to find breakage or cracks in your drain piping and then perform the necessary repairs. If you are experiencing rat issues, please call us right away so we can handle this problem as soon as possible!

I think I have a leak. What should I do?

Some leaks are more obvious that others. Maybe the evidence of a leak only happens after turning on the tap or appears only when it rains. Naturally, if you see water and suspect a leak, try to find the source (either by finding the water’s path or looking for drips). Close off the nearest valve if you can and call us right away. Our experts will ask you questions to help us determine the best course of action.

What is the difference between copper water pipes and plastic ones?

There are pros and cons for both copper and plastic pipes. Copper can be soldered and tested, and is great in most situations unless you have low pH or harsh water. Some plastic pipes become brittle and prone to damage over time, however some modern PVC pipes used for water and sewage are tough, reliable and cheaper. We are here to help you determine what material is best suited for your needs!
